President's Report: 2009-2010 Year in Review
Despite a tumultuous year, the Club has moved steadily ahead.
Dear Members and Fellow Alumni,
This past year has been interesting indeed! One cannot help but reflect on the dramatic transformation that has occurred in our country: After sinking to a 10-year low in March 2009, the stock market has staged an incredible recovery, up over 50%, but the Dow is still more than 20% below its all-time high set in October 2007. Signs of a recovery, albeit weak, are finally emerging. Other notable events this past year were the passage of a highly partisan health care bill, expiration of the estate tax, continuing investigations and new regulations as a fallout of the financial markets meltdown in the fall of 2008, and most recently, the threat of a Euro-zone breakdown with the financial crisis in Greece.
In contrast to the tumultuous world around us, your HBS Club of Jacksonville has moved steadily ahead and continues to build on the momentum of the prior year. Our membership has again increased, and the Club remains fiscally strong. These accomplishments would not be possible without the hard work of our Secretary/Treasurer and the support of our Board of Directors.
We have strived to achieve our goal of creating a meaningful fellowship and connection among the HBS alumni in the Jacksonville area. During fiscal 2009-2010, the Club hosted a number of events, including:
• Executive Briefing Luncheons at the River Club
o Michael Ward, CEO of CSX Corporation
o HBS Prof. Earl Sasser on “The Ownership Quotient”
o Fisher, Tousey, Leas & Ball on the future of estate taxes
o Deloitte Tax LLP on the latest tax updates from Washington, D.C.
• Annual Membership Meeting with Gary Chartrand, Exec. Chairman of Acosta Sales & Marketing
• Special Member-only pricing for a dinner cruise and performance by Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra of Mozart’s violin concerto
• HBS Virtual Learning Series teleconference calls – a total of 9 separate calls throughout the fall and spring on topics ranging from “The Current State of Entrepreneurship” and “Answer to the Global Business Crises” to “Corporate Social Responsibility” and “Negotiation Ethics.” VLS calls are provided free to Club Members as an exclusive benefit!
The Club continues to leverage the power and efficiency of its website, www.hbsjax.org. A central repository of information on the Club, the website contains all of our future and past events, photo albums, and a member directory. There are also continuously updated news feeds from HBS as well as a careers page with links to helpful alumni resources. Please visit our website today and give us your feedback!
At the end of the day, the Club only exists for the benefit of its Members, but we need your input and participation. If you would like to see the Club pursue other initiatives, host new kinds of events, bring alternative speakers before the group, or undertake any other worthwhile effort, please let us know…and then get involved! We have several committees that you can contribute your time and help inprove the Club.
On behalf of the Board, I thank you for your support now and in the future.
Respectfully submitted this 19th day of May, 2010.
Regards,
John R. Marshall, President
HBS Club of Jacksonville
P.S. Don't forget to renew your membership for next year (2010-2011), and if you are not currently a member, please consider joining the Club and supporting our efforts to create interesting and enjoyable activities for Jacksonville alumni.
